The field of nursing has expanded into areas previously handled by physicians or physician assistants, who in the past were usually men. Trends in nursing education changes from basic general nursing service to doctorate education in nursing.

Shortages of Nurses throughout the world:

A study in 2004 revealed that there were 1,40,000 nursing jobs vacant in the United States. It also projected that by the year 2020, these vacant positions will reach 1 million. Another survey conducted with 400 nurses revealed that over 97% are willing to work abroad and about 2/3rd of them wish to work in the US where they are provided with innumerable facilities and benefits. Unlike other professions, Nurses can apply for Green card on the same day they land in the U.S.
